MEMÓRIA
(Memory)
(35 mm, 14 min, color, 1990)

In Brazil, film copies can be shown for 5 years then they are destroyed. A factory in São Paulo uses copies of films as raw material to make brooms. 25 years after retiring from public life, Jânio Quadros is elected mayor of São Paulo. 1989 is a decisive year for Brazil: the first general elections in 3 decades. Some candidates are old familiar faces. But nobody remembers anymore what happened last time.

Reviews

"The absolute highlight (...) is 'Memory', directed by Roberto Henkin. (...) Made shortly before Fernando Collor de Mello taking office as president, the documentary focuses on a blind woman who loves films and, paradoxically, works in a factory that uses old films as raw material to make brooms. At the same time, the film reflects on Jânio Quadros’ use of the broom as a symbol in relation to Collor’s discourse as the "hunter of the corrupt". It is the most incisive testimony in Brazilian cinema about the government that tried to destroy it."
