(04/Nov/2003)

The feature Houve Uma Vez Dois Verões (Two Summers), by Jorge Furtado, produced by Casa de Cinema de Porto Alegre, is one of the nominees for the Best Film award at the Grande Prêmio do Cinema Brasileiro 2003, promoted by the Academia Brasileira de Cinema (Brazilian Film Academy). The film has also been nominated in the categories Original Screenplay (Jorge Furtado) and Costume Design (Rô Cortinhas).

The Casa de Cinema de Porto Alegre is also competing in the short fiction film category with Dona Cristina Perdeu a Memória (Dona Cristina Lost Her Memory), by Ana Luiza Azevedo. The winners will be known on December 9th, at the Odeon Theatre, in Rio.

The Grande Prêmio Cinema Brasil was created by the Ministry of Culture in 2000 with the purpose of promoting the development of the art of filmmaking in Brazil. The Brazilian Association of Art Critics voted on the films via e-mail and drafted a short list out of 40 films shown between January 1st and December 31st 2002.

Among the nominees for best film are Cidade de Deus (City of God), by Fernando Meirelles, Dias de Nietzsche em Turim (Nietzsche’s Days in Turin) by Júlio Bressane, O Invasor (The Invader), by Beto Brant, and Madame Satã, by Karim Aïnouz.

Two Summers was shown on cinema screens and launched in VHS and DVD last month. This feature film was elected Best Film by the critics at the 12th Cine Ceará film festival, where it also won the Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Editing awards. This year, Two Summers was elected Best Film by the official jury of the 5th Brazilian Film Festival of Paris.

Currently, the Casa de Cinema de Porto Alegre is working on the series CENA ABERTA, a co-production with Globo TV, scheduled to be shown from November. For 2004 the production house is preparing two feature film projects: Roteiros Econtrados Em Um Computador (Screenplays Found in a Computer), by Carlos Gerbase, and Antes Que o Mundo Acabe (Before the World Ends), by Ana Azevedo.
