TOLERÂNCIA (Tolerance)

(35 mm, 110 min, color, 2000)

The story of a forty-something couple, who, when trying to put their libertarian theories into practice, find out that some feelings - like passion and jealousy - cannot be controlled by theories. Both a drama and a thriller, Tolerance is a small inventory of the shattered dreams of a generation that intended to be revolutionary.

Reviews

"Gerbase’s main achievement is to have intertwined, with competence and originality, various power lines: sex, politics and crime.(...) This mechanism of continuous destruction and reconstruction of the ‘real’ makes TOLERANCE a stimulating exercise in cinematic narrative, enlivening and discussing all its dimensions: crime thriller, psychological drama and mainly, a biased stocktaking of a generation."
(José Geraldo Couto, Folha de São Paulo, 23/10/2000)

"The film, directed by Carlos Gerbase (who, as a good southerner, is also a writer and has just published a new book), is super modern. It has swinging couples, an all girl hard rock band. It could have been made in any Brazilian metropolis, except for a few details. All characters use the form tu (instead of você). Even Maitê Proença, who is from São Paulo, learned to call policemen brigadianos. And the character played by Roberto Bomtempo works with computer graphics and, at a certain point, appears drinking chimarrão."
(João Gabriel de Lima, Revista Veja, 08/11/2000)

"Everything falls into place, everything is justified, qualities that every screenplay constructed as a puzzle pursues, but very seldom achieves. TOLERANCE is a film made by the book, exemplary in its execution and, most importantly, it is commercial while it is still intelligent."
(Jaime Biaggio, O GLOBO, Rio de Janeiro, 10/11/2000)

"There are many reasons why TOLERANCE should be appreciated. Gerbase approaches the classical narrative forms, but he does not refuse to be modern. And his film has the first, essential virtue: it seeks to express itself through the observation of real characters. Here is a story that seeks to talk about the world by looking at the creatures that inhabit it."
(Hélio Nascimento, JORNAL DO COMÉRCIO, Porto Alegre, 17/11/2000)

"The ability to transform the psychological drama of the beginning of the film into an erotic thriller makes TOLERANCE a bold and surprising production."
(Stefan Ligocki, ZERO HORA, Porto Alegre, 31/10/2000)

"TOLERANCE is one of the best Brazilian films of recent years. Besides the film itself, the model of production, based on collective work, is an example to be followed by Brazilian filmmakers."
(Newton Cannito, REVISTA DE CINEMA, November 2000)

"The story weaves together erotic scenes, virtual sex and manipulation of truth. It shows how a marriage is threatened when the woman, played by Maitê Proença, has a bout of honesty and confesses to her husband (Roberto Bomtempo) that she has committed adultery. (...) The result is a clever mixture of ingredients. TOLERANCE is unpretentious, without being banal".
(REVISTA ÉPOCA, Rio de Janeiro, 06/11/2000)

"TOLERANCE is a very well made film. It implodes the concept of genre, because it transits through several genres, which reveals that Gerbase's other concern, besides taking a critical look at the ideals of the '68 generation, is discussing the language of cinema itself."
(Luiz Carlos Merten, AGÊNCIA ESTADO, São Paulo, 10/11/2000)

"The film constantly questions justice, work ethics, fidelity in marriage and so on. TOLERANCE, in the case of these – very well played - characters, achieves amazing degrees of elasticity. The director, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jorge Furtado, Giba Assis Brasil and Álvaro Teixeira, draws a parallel with our country and its people today. And he hits the mark."
(Alessandro Gianinni, ISTO É/GENTE, São Paulo, 13/11/2000)

"Brazilian cinema had not produced an erotic thriller for a long time, specially, one as enthralling as this. Carlos Gerbase's TOLERANCE starts out as a marital drama, but it gradually grabs the spectator's attention, as it becomes a thriller."
(JORNAL DA TARDE, São Paulo, 10/11/2000)

"It starts out as a classic case of betrayal, a settling of accounts between husband and wife, it becomes a thriller and it also questions the moral values of a free generation. And it is all put together with talent."
(GAZETA MERCANTIL, São Paulo, 10/11/2000)

"TOLERANCE is a film of today, globalizing, it deals with questions that are directly linked to our country's reality, such as the incompatibility between the discourse of justice and social reality, as well as universal themes, such as the new order brought on by the phenomenon of virtual reality. In a world where reality is becoming increasingly more liable to manipulation, tolerance runs the risk of becoming a utopia. Too bad for civilization."
(Ricardo Cota, JORNAL DO BRASIL, Rio de Janeiro, 10/11/2000)

"Carlos Gerbase and the Casa de Cinema team have made a modern and instigating movie that should be seen more than once. TOLERANCE manages to be ironic and frightening at the same time, showing our present reality in terms of behavior and politics."
(Goida, ABC DOMINGO, Novo Hamburgo, 12/11/2000)

"Competent and effective, this is a gripping film that holds the viewer´s attention. It is yet another Brazilian film that deserves to be checked out on the big screen."
(Celso Sabadin, CINECLICK, 06/11/2000)

"A commercial and artistic success, Gerbase’s new film represents a safe haven in the evolution of its director’s filming style since the times of Inverno – Winter (1983). (...) Gerbase proves to be a sensitive director of actors, producing harmony among the different actors’ styles, where the casual beauty of Maitê Proença is measured against the inner tension of de Roberto Bontempo and (...) the laid back and sensual teenagers in the film."
(Eron Duarte Fagundes, DVD Magazine)

"TOLERANCE is filled with creative references to the classics. The story of the murder, committed by Maitê’s client, changes at each version, as in Kurosawa’s stunning ‘Rashomon’. Bomtempo is caught with the crime’s weapon, like Cary Grant in ‘North by Northwest’; and the blood flowing in the sink is a clear reference to the end of the shower scene in ‘Psycho’. (...) On the whole, it is intelligent entertainment, that is appealing and makes you think.”
