(35 mm, 75 min, color, 1985) Raul is extroverted and a joker. He is coming out of a frustrated marriage and spends his time listening to and playing melancholy boleros in the small apartment where he lives. Saul is shy, critical and bitter. He is coming out of an engagement that lasted so long it had to end. He has recently tried to commit suicide. Raul and Saul are two ordinary, sensitive, lonely guys and they meet at their first day of work in a government office.

"AQUELES DOIS (THOSE TWO) was the biggest surprise of Rio Cine Festival, the best Brazilian film of 1985, at least up until now. Although it is being sold as a story about homosexuality, THOSE TWO is much more than that, it is a film about the human condition, loneliness, emptiness, dissatisfaction, life in the big city. Sérgio Amon was able to remain faithful to Caio Fernando Abreu’s short story and, at the same time, to expand it, even giving it a more open, more optimistic conclusion. The fact that the film is a production from Rio Grande do Sul, from outside the Rio - São Paulo area, lends it even more charm, the special charm of the accents, of the behavior of the province. Another merit of the film is the sure hand in the direction of actors, who are unknown to us, but highly competent."

"The director (...) managed to use the raw material of the short story, which is full of suggestion and subtlety, and also its atmosphere of psychological drama and disillusion. Fortunately the director did not give in to the temptation of turning Caio Fernando Abreu's concise text into a gay love story. (...) In the last shot, those two are having a good laugh, as if they were saying 'we don't give a damn', while their colleagues at the office end up, as in the tale, 'unhappily ever after'.
